Case Study: Creating a Campaign Website
Company: Carolyn Swanson, School Board Member
Role: Website Designer
Problem: Carolyn had zero website skills but wanted a website that looked a little DIY so she was relatable and authentic to her potential voters.
Solution: We decided to use WordPress since she already had another WordPress website and was paying for that hosting. Carolyn wanted a simple, clean aesthetic that made it feel like she was a “hometown neighbor” (which she is!) since the spot she was running for was School Board Member.
Tools Used: WordPress, Google Workspace

Deeper Dive:
The whole process started with an initial Zoom to review and add to her branding choices. She wanted her website to look like she could have made it herself, so in her words, “not too flashy or fancy.” Carolyn came prepared with a logo that played off that vibe. We went with a crisp, clean template that was highly customizable and incorporated her logo into the header to really hit that “hometown” vibe from the beginning.
Since the logo was red and white, red became one of the main brand colors. Based on the headshot she had for the home page where she was wearing a (fabulous!) green blazer, we chose teal as her second main color since going red and green was a little too Christmasy.
She also had most of the content that she wanted on her website. It was a lot. There was the welcome letter on her home page, her extensive About page that detailed her background, her Priorities page, and finally all her Endorsements. Plus all of this text needed to be in both English and Spanish. So from there, it was a design challenge to make a text-heavy website look good. I made design choices that helped break up the text-heavy pages but were still simple enough for someone with low to medium tech skills.
I also linked to her Facebook Page where she shared frequent updates and her secure donation platform. I also embedded a Google Form that collected responses from folks who wanted to put one of her campaign signs in their yard.
The Results:
Carolyn won! She deserves all the credit for that win, but her website did help her efficiently collect donations and distribute campaign signs.
